Living at Playa del Risco

Yesterday one again we went down to Playa del Risco, which probably is the most remote beach on Lanzarote. There is no road access to this part of the island and the only way to get there is to walk one hour down the steep path which starts at 450m above sealevel on the Risco de Famara near Ye.The view over to the Islands of the archipelago Chinijo is great. The beach is about one km long with white sand and swimming there is fine.
It's incredible, but there are 3 inhabited houses down there. They have water due to a pipe that collects water from a well in the risco but no electricity. In one house lives a spanish couple, the other two are inhabited by two men and since a few months it seems that another person lives in a tent. They have to buy their food up in Haria and carry it down by foot.

Playa Teneza

A narrow road leads down to the wild west coast of Lanzarote from Tinajo. After 7 km you reach Playa Teneza where a small village stands by the sea.Usually it's only inhabitad during weekends and holiday season by fishermen. From here you can take a walk through lavaflow along the rough and rocky wild west coast of the island in western direction....

Teguise

Teguise was founded by Maciot de Béthencourt back in 1428.It is the oldest canarian colonial city.It was the capital of Lanzarote until 1852-since then it's Arrecife.Teguise today is a laid back city with 14 000 inhabitants.During the week it's quite and you can stroll along the streets which give you the impression being in a mexican colonial city.On sundays Teguise gets real busy, when the weekly market attracts thousands of tourists.

Rainbows

At present we are experiencing a bad weather period-the first rain arrived to Lanzarote very early this year-it was at the end of september...since then,we have often windy days, the sun is shining every day but just for 4-6 hours..there are always clouds passing by and some showers in between...so we can often watch spectacular rainbows....the result is,that this year nature on this island is green already since mid november-normally the island gets green in mid january...we have the first blooming meadows now.

Timanfaya National Park

Lanzarote was rocked by the world's longest ever volcaic eruption from 1730 to 1736.Which covered around one quarter of the island in a sea of lava.
Today, the volcano park at Timanfaya is Lanzarote's most popular tourist attraction. In 2006 alone, nearly 900 000 people visited this unique lava scape-which is home to scores colourful dormant volcanoes nd spent cones.
The landscape here is raw and eerie, resembling how our planet must have looked when first fomed millions of years ago.Or perhaps like another world altogether-as Timanfaya is often compared to the moon.
Visitrs to Timanfaya are not permitted to walk through the park.Instead coaches collect them from the car park and then wend their way through the landscape.Cesar Manrique created a stylishly designed restaurant on top of a volcano-the Islote de Hilario-in the center of the park. Here visitors can enjoy entertaining demonstrations which attest to the heat still emanating from many miles beneath the earth. As well as watching their food cooked by the same natural power source on a huge open barbecue.
Five minutes back in the direction of Yaiza is the camel station, where tourists can enjoy a twenty minute ride around the perimeter of the park.

Charco del Palo is a small village on the cliffy noth-eastern coast of Lanzarote. It was founded in 1970 by 3 Germans.Today about 200 residents live here.Mostly German,British and Spanish nationals, but also some Austrians,Dutch and Swiss. In adition there are some people who spend the wintertime here in their properties. The Tourists who come here stay in one of the numerous apartements which you can rent. http://www.charcodelpalo.com/ .There are no Hotels. The place has a small shopping center with a super market and 4 restaurants.
What makes Charco del Palo special is-since December 1980it has the only official permission as a naturist place in the canarian archipelago-so clothing is optional here. The surroundings are scenic-you reach the village on a deadend road from Mala that winds down 3km to the sea ,passing cactus growing fields. The road has been paved only in 1995.We do not have a beach, but 3 places to swim within the place.First there is a natual pool-a wall protects it from high waves so you can swim safe almost anytime here.It is surrounded by sandy terraces. On a rocky peninsula you can also sunbathe and swim in the open sea-conditions permitting-two ladders lead to the water. And then there is a tide-pool protected from waves by an outlying reef. Here you can swim safe when the tides are not at their lowest level.Sunworshippers can make themselves comfortable on sandy terraces surrounding the bay.Along the coast there is no road. You can walk in a sandy plain dotted with lava rocks called El Jable de Mala towards the north until you reach the small Playa del Seifio where a fishermen house stands. On the way you will find many "Castillos"(manmade stonewalls) where you can relax by the sea on sandy ground.A fisherman lives here in a lava-cave since about six months. In the distance you can see the the mountainrange of the Risco de Famara and the majestic volcano Monte Corona in the North. In southern direction the hills come closer to the coast-there are several coves where you can swim-conditions permitting-and also here you will find castillos dottet around. After about 3km you reach Los Cocoteros-another village.
The region here is also very popular for fishing and scuba-diving.
We live here happily since May 2007-from our two terraces we can see the atlantic-spectacular sunrises. With the exeption of one breakfast, when it was rainy,we had all our meals al fresco.

Isla La Graciosa

If you drive to the northern tip of Lanzarote you will have a breathtaking view of the small island La Graciosa from the Mirador del Rio on top of the Risco de Famara.Together with the smaller islands of Montana Clara, Alegranza,Roque del Oeste and Roque del Este they make up the archipelago Chinijo.Of all these islands La Graciosa is the biggest with 27 km2 and it is the only one being inhabited.650 people are registered on the Island and they all live in the village of Caleta del Sebo. There is another small settlement,Pedro Barba, but this consists only of a few holiday houses. There are no paved roads on the island-even in Caleta del Sebo the streets are of sand. There are only a few 4x4 jeeps which you can hire as a taxi -otherwise you have to rent a bike or walk.Walking is probably the most pleasant way of getting around. You can reach the Island by boat from Orzola in the north of Lanzarote several times a day.The trip takes only 20 minutes. When leaving Orzola the sea is usually rough until you have reached the majestic northern tip of Lanzarote and you turn into 'El Rio'(the river) a 2km wide passage between the two islands. You can visit the island on a day trip or stay overnight in one of the two small hostels. There are also some appartements for holidaymakers. There are 3 supermarkets,a post office and a few restaurants. Most time of the year the island is quite and you will have the golden sandy beaches dotted around the island almost to your own.
